Setting Boundaries and Limits
Avoid the power struggles and teach respect and acceptance for reasonable limits. Learn the five basic childhood needs positive boundaries address. How do you teach them to recognize cues to social boundaries? Where are you on the continuum from ignoring or avoiding to controlling?

Developmental Stages/Developmental Caregiving
Effective communication and discipline for children at different levels of development. What are the five stages and what kind of adult responses and authority to the children in each stage need and respond to best? What are the issues and primary emotional and social needs of children by stage of development?

Anger and Children– Learn the links and break the chain. If you want a child to express anger appropriately, you must first teach them to recognize that they are having an emotional response. Learn some kid-friendly ways to teach emotional recognition, responsibility for your responses, how to use a 1-5 scale to teach gradations and evaluate the size of a problem and respond in a way that matches the size of the problem, and create and emotional chest of tools with five categories of good things to do with mad feelings. Anxiety and Children– Teach children how to recognize and manage their own fears. Learn how to respond in a way that provides empathy while also indicating to the child that the adult ultimately can not change the way the child feels- the child will have to do something besides avoiding the situation they fear if they want to begin feeling more the way they want to. Anxious kids usually want to make the people or environment give them what they want or remove a demand they fear, so at some point they usually will need some help with accountability to encourage them to experiment with actually using their coping strategies instead of using avoidance and extreme behaviors to manipulate others. I will also be presenting at Hyde Park Baptist Church in Austin for hopefully about 600 teachers on July 10 and 11 on the topics of digital media management for children, autism/aspergers, and adhd/odd.
If you are a counselor or school psychologist I hope you will join me at ESC Region 13 on October 14 & 15 for a two day summit on counseling strategies to use in schools with students identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Serious Emotional Disturbance. Participants will also get a book with counseling forms and templates as well as four follow-up online group meetings to discuss cases and finesse implementation.
November 12 & 13 I will be doing a workshop similar to the one above in Edinburg, which is near McAllen, for ESC Region 1.
