What is integrative medicine, healing, psychology and psychiatry?
I was reading an article in the May/June 2013 edition of The Optimist and I thought,
"YES! More people need to treat mental health this way!"
According to the American Psychological Association, nearly 20% of Americans are on
psychotropic medications, about half of them take antidepressants. An integrative
practitioner encourages exercise, socialization, hanging around people who are
happy, spiritual pursuit and growth, changes in diet, and mindfulness, which may
include meditation and cognitive-behavioral therapy, catching unhelpful and
self-destructive thinking patterns and replacing with more accurate and helpful
thoughts.
Many medical practitioners in training are seeking answers outside of being a pill
doctor to treat people with natural therapies that don't make patients dependent and
don't have side effects.
