1. How do we prepare our children for the new world of the future?
2. Social Skills Groups
3. Low-cost workshops for parents and educators
1. How will the world be different in 10 years?
With the advances in technology and connectivity it is difficult to predict. Add to that the current economic and political climate, only one thing seems certain. It’s going to change, I think it’s going to change a lot.
2. Social Skills Groups
What kind of education and skills will our children need in the new world to come?
I was reading a prediction about this by Darren Hardy in the July issue of Success magazine. Basically it stated that as distribution channels flatten, huge corporations will lose their hold on the marketplace as small businesses and individuals can electronically market and deliver goods and services anywhere anytime at lower costs.
“Soft skills” will become more marketable and necessary as demand for “hard skills” or technological savvy becomes less required. These soft skills include social skills, emotional intelligence, resiliency, productivity skills, personal branding, persuasive communication skills, the ability to form and maintain relationships, adaptability, networking, self-starting or initiation skills, organizational and self-management skills which will help individuals create and maintain their own brands and businesses, many of which will be operated from home. If the public schools dont teach this, who will do this?
I’ve got at least two cents for anybody with more ideas about this topic. It’s a bit frustrating to think we’re preparing our children for yesterday’s world.
Public schools have had budget cuts translating into less “extra” services, and funds for substitutes so that teachers can attend trainings are no longer available. I am currently working with the Educational Service Center Region XIII in Austin to develop on-demand videos to train educational staff in the basics of providing effective social skills groups. The plan is for these videos to be available to educators across the state of Texas. They would be able to watch the videos anytime anywhere, like during a conference period or from the comfort of home, so the staff will not have to leave the classrooms to receive quality training.
All groups will meet for six weeks starting the first week of November, skipping the week of Thanksgiving, and ending the week of Dec. 15, 2011
