What to expect from child counseling for self-esteem in the Georgetown, Round Rock, Cedar Park area.
It’s worrisome to hear your child or teen say things like “I”m no good, I can’t do anything right,” or worse “I wish I was dead.” You know these statements are false, but logic and encouragement seem to fall on deaf ears. Maybe it’s time to enlist some professional help, get to the bottom of things, and teach better thinking habits by getting some child counseling for self-esteem in the Georgetown Round Rock area of northern Austin, Texas.
Child counseling for self-esteem usually involves teaching skills for understanding that not all of our thoughts are true. We can practice thinking about thoughts and statements, asking ourselves if they are really true, and talking back to the thought or replacing the thought with something more accurate, true, or just feels better.
I’m Brad Mason, I’ve worked with kids, teens, and adults for 30 years helping them build a better self-concept through healthier thinking habits. There is a specific set of thinking error categories to learn and practice with in conversations and games I use. I work with many good, bright people who have traits of perfectionism, and can fall apart, shut down, or get really down on themselves for small errors. There are no good reasons for this to be happening. Very good reasons for intervening and teaching acceptance and practice of loving yourself, being kind to yourself, especially when you err or someone else is mad or disappointed with you.
When counseling children for self-esteem from the Georgetown and Round Rock areas, I also work closely with parents. As a parent you can be a pivotal influence helping your loved one apply skills learned in a counseling session outside of my office where it really counts. This increases the odds that the skills taught will be used until better habits are formed and become automatic. This can happen in a few weeks to a couple months. It does not have to take months or years of ongoing therapy, and I don’t think it should.
As long as your child, especially if a teen or young adult, is willing to allow you to help and support them, and participate in their therapy, I provide forms, handouts, and digital resources. These can be used at home as reminders of skills taught that can be implemented in real situations of sadness, acting out, and withdrawal. I also provide exercises to practice and work on for building stronger self-esteem and resilience to minor frustrations and disappointments.
I can also answer your questions and provide guidance on how you can best word your interactions with your child or teen in helpful ways while still making it clear that only they can apply new habits and skills for a happier healthier life. You would do it for them if you could, but in the end only they make their own feelings, and only they can really learn to love and accept themselves as they are.
Don’t wait until it’s too late. Especially if they have made any statements about wanting to be gone, dead, or end it all, this should be a trigger to get professional mental health help immediately. You can get it started right now by booking an appointment with me online here on my website.
