Autism and Asperger Syndrome Sensitivity Training

Sensitivity Training

I found this on the Autism Speaks group in Linkedin;

This will be my second year doing various "Autism Units" during the month of April
focused on raising Autism Awareness but also to open the discussion about how
similar we are compared to focusing on differences and how to be a good friend to
someone with ASD. I use a lot of read-alouds to open the discussion and I'm always
so impressed with the student's responses. Some of the texts I use are:

My best friend Will- (child's perspective of having a friend with ASD)

All Cats have Asperger Syndrome- (so great)

Fish is Fish (focuses on the perspective taking aspect of ASD)

(http://trk.cp20.com/Tracking/t.c?84n71-mg1a1-af2aip4&_v=2)

Swimmy- (focus on how differences make us stronger)

Me I am- (focuses on the importance of uniqueness)

(http://trk.cp20.com/Tracking/t.c?84n71-mg1a3-af2aip6&_v=2)

and There is only one you- (I save this for the last day!)

We then end the unit by making an autism quilt made of puzzle pieces with the
prompt: "I can be a good friend to someone with Autism by ________________" and we
also all wear blue to "Light It Up Blue" on the last day of the unit

Hope this helps! If you or anyone else has any other ideas please let me know!
